The National Diet and Nutrition Survey is a study of people’s eating habits across the UK, people like you. It's jointly funded by Public Health England (PHE) and the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA). Each year about 1300 people, aged 18 months and up, take part. It gives us a snapshot of the country’s diet and nutritional habits and helps us monitor the success of government diet and health initiatives, like the 5-a-day.

We can't visit every household in the UK, so each year we select a sample. Only the people who live in these households can take part in the study and if you’ve been selected, no one else can take your place. This is because you’ve been chosen using a scientific method that means everyone in the UK has a known chance of selection. Your interviewer will randomly select one adult and one child from your household to participate in the survey.

Nutrition is a complex business, so to get the full picture we want to ask about a number of different areas, including, eating habits, health and lifestyle, and some physical measurements. Your interviewer will also ask you if you're happy to complete a four day food and drink diary.

The results of the survey will help us get an overview of the nutritional habits of the country as a whole and find out how much fruit, vegetables, saturated fats and sugar people are eating. This will help the Government monitor their targets, such as the 5-a-day recommendation for fruit and vegetables.
